Guided Tour of the Verrès Castle
Verrès castle is a typical monobloc castle built by Ibleto of Challant on a rock controlling the main Valley and the Ayas Valley. The castle belonged to the Challant’s family until 1565 when it became Savoy’s property. In 1661 Duke Carlo Emanuele 1st converged all armies located here to the Fortress of Bard.
The Challant regained possession of the castle in 1696 and kept it until 19th century.
The castle was eventually bought by architect Alfredo d’Andrade, who restored it and donated it to the State.
During the guided tour of the Verrès castle we can admire the defensive structure consisting of loopholes, portcullis and a drawbridge. The castle has three floors connected by a monumental stone staircase.
Each year the castle hosts the Historic Carnival of Verrès, with the representation of the epic of Countess Caterina of Challant and her husband Pierre d’Introd.
