Valgrisenche

Visit of Valgrisenche

Valgrisenche is characterized by a wild and uncontaminated territory surrounded by mountains covered with glaciers, among which the splendid Ruitor.

Along the main road, over the orographic right bank of the Dora Valgrisenche, in a position dominating the entrance to the valley the Montmayeur castle, built during the 13th century and today it is reduced to ruins.

The Village of Valgrisenche il placed close the Beauregard dam, built in 1954, after the lowering works, has acquired a new dimension well integrated into the landscape.

Worth a visit the Parish Church of San Grato erected when the parish was established in 1392, restored and extended in 1666 and 1821. In the apse there are the statues of Saint Nicholas and Saint Grato: this last, patron of the Aosta Valley, as well as of the village, is celebrated on September 7th.

The village is famous for the weaving of draps, that is a rustic fabric made from sheep’s wool worked on the old wooden looms. The “drap” is particularly used as textiles for furnishings because it is hard wearing, durable and boasts a particular warmth. In Valgrisenche, the tradition of the “drap” is still alive today thanks to the precious work of the “Les Tisserands” cooperative.

The cooperative displays every year in the traditional Sant’Orso Fair in Aosta and Sant’Orso Fair in Donnas.
