Guided tour of the Sarriod de la Tour Castle
Sarriod de La Tour Castle located in a flat area that ends with a sharp drop to the Dora Baltea river in Saint Pierre and surrounded by lush apple orchards, it has been mentioned since 12th century and its original structure consisted of a central tower (donjon), the chapel and boundary wall. The many alterations over the centuries gave it the irregular appearance that still today distinguishes it.
From the 15th century to 1923 the castle belonged to the aristocratic Sarriod’s family, then to the Bensa’s family from Genoa, and since 1970 it belongs to the Regional Council of Aosta Valley.
In the first half of the 15th century, Jean de la tour transformed the castle into a refined mansion. A new cycle of works embarked on by Jean’s son Antoine in the 1470s transformed the chapel rededicating it to the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist and the northern wing of the castle.
Inside the castle we can admirebeautiful frescoes in the chapel, the monumental viret (spiral staircase), cross windows from 15th century and the baronial hall, known as hall of heads because the coffered ceiling is decorated with typical medieval grotesque and licentious carved figures.
