Guided tour of the Sarre Royal Castle
Sarre Royal Castle, mentioned during the 13th century, belonged for centuries to different families until 18th century, when it was bought by businessman Baron Jean-François Ferrod, who renovated it before going bankrupt. The castle has today a big residential building and a central tower.
In 1869 it was bought by King Victor Emmanuel II, called the Hunter King, and was the headquarter for hunting expeditions in the Gran Paradiso Valleys. In that period all interiors were restored for the King’s needs. His son, Humbert I, renovated the castle and built the Hall of Trophies, decorated with antlers of ibex and chamois.
The castle was used as summer holiday residence by the Royal Family until 1946. After World War II the castle was managed by the Moriana Society and since 1989 it belongs to the Regional Council of Aosta Valley.
The castle tells of a great passion for hunting in the wild valleys of Cogne, Rhemes and Valsavarenche. This area became in 1922 the Great Paradiso National Park, Italy’s firs nature park.
The Sarre Royal castle retains still today the original furniture and displays the history of House of Savoy in the Aosta
