Visit of Gressoney-Saint-Jean
The Gressoney Valley was settled during the Middle Ages by a population of Germanic origins: the Walser. Here you can enjoy a traditional architecture made by typical wooden stadel and hear speaking Germanic dialects.
Gressoney-Saint-Jean is situated in a particularly interesting area due to its view of impressive mountain massif and the Lyskamm glacier. In the center of the village there is the picturesque Lake Gover whose waters are a beautiful emerald green and reflect the surrounding, majestic summits.
It has a characteristic historic center and the houses are grouped together around the Saint John the Baptist parish Church built in 1725 on a previous building dating from 1515.
Savoy Castle and Queen Margherita
This wonderful area was beloved also by Queen Margherita of Savoy, who built in Gressoney her summer residence, the Savoy Castle.
The castle, designed by architect Emilio Stramucci in neogothic style has a fairy appearance and overlooks the Mount Rosa glacier.
The castle is also surrounded by a beautiful park with a botanic garden hosting alpine flora.
Thanks to Queens Margherita of Savoy’s interest the village knew a golden period, and today has become one of the most appreciated vacation resorts in the Alps.
Gressoney-La-Trinité
Gressoney-La-Trinité, is the last village at the head of the Gressoney Valley. It is situated at an altitude of 1627 meters in a vast flatland dominated by the Lyskamm glacier of the impressive Monte Rosa massif. The village is famous for winter sports, since it belongs to the Monterosa Ski area which is one of the largest in the Alps.
The village has also an interesting Walser Museum that leads its guests on a journey to discover the Walser culture. Through the visit of two buildings: an old rural house from the 18th century and the house-museum with permanent exhibitions, the visitors can breathe the authentic atmosphere of a Walser home. The museum features the “Wohngade”, which was the very heart of the working activity of the inhabitants, with one part used as a shelter for the animals and the other for the family while in the rooms of a “stadel”, the typical Walser house, visitor can visit a permanent exhibition about Monte Rosa and the Gressoney’s traditional costume.
