Great Saint Bernard Pass

Guided Tour of the Great Saint Bernard Pass

Great Saint Bernard Pass is situated at 2473 meters a. s. l. and links the Aosta Valley to Switzerland.

Since Roman times, when the temple dedicated to Jupiter Poeninus was built on the Great Saint Bernard Pass, the valley has constituted an important access route through the Alps.

In 1045 Saint Bernard built a hospice managed by a congregation of canons regular on the pass for the purpose of recovering pilgrims, who were following Via Francigena. The hospice looks to a little lake dominated by the saint’s statue. During summer is also possible to visit the church, the treasure museum and large dogs breeding.

Heading down the valley we can taste the famous Jambon de Bosses, produced in Saint Rhémy-en-Bosses and visit Etroubles, a beautiful village transformed into a museum with many artworks.
During winter the Great Saint Bernard Valley has also a colored Carnaval.

I suggest to visit also the Cooperative and Visitor Centre Fontina in Valpelline that produces the famous Fontina cheese, the most famous PDO product in the whole Aosta Valley.
