Guided Tour of the Duke of Abruzzi Alpine Museum
Walking in centre of Courmayeur it is impossible to disregard the House of Guides placed in front of the church.
This beautiful building hosts the Duke of Abruzzi Alpine Museum wanted by Luigi Amedeo of Savoy, Duke of the Abruzzi and was inaugurated in 1929. Luigi Amedeo of Savoy was an aristocratic and alpinist who did many expeditions in Alaska, Africa, K2 and North Pole helped by some alpine Guides from Courmayeur.
The Duke of Abruzzi Alpine Museum keeps the memory of the Alpine Guides of Courmayeur and documents the origin and development of the Guide craft, which is of paramount importance for the enhancement of the mountain in all its aspects.
The first floor displays a lot of documents, photographs, mountain climbing equipment and souvenirs belonging to the Alpine Guides of Courmayeur. The second floor is dedicated to the evolution of alpinism and alpine guides activities depicting a lot of objects used by them during their job.
During the 150th anniversary of the Society Guide Alpine in Courmayeur in 2005 has been done the conservative restoration of the historic House of Guides and the museum has been completely renovated.
