Visit of Villages Bard and Donnas

From the village of Bard to the village of Donnas, an itinerary that crosses 2000 years of history between Roman times and the Middle Ages and which winds through an iconic territory for its heroic viticulture.

A slow walk through history, art and nature, discovering the morphology of the area and the mountainous rocks that preserve ancient rock engravings and the signs of the slow and inexorable work of the Balteo Glacier.

We will cross the village of Bard, a typical village born along the Roman road which today presents itself in its almost intact medieval urban layout and preserves valuable residential buildings from the 15th-16th centuries and precious richly frescoed chapels.

Following the course of the Road to Gaul you will admire the centuries-old terraces, created on the rocky walls using dry stone walls, a symbol of the heroic viticulture of this area which gave rise to the first DOC wine of the Aosta Valley: Donnas.

We will then reach the Roman road of Gaul in Donnas, a place where the Romans launched a real challenge to nature by carving the living rock for about 200 meters on which they were able to build perfectly vertical walls and in whose womb they created the roadbed, furrows wheelwrights and a milestone.

Finally, we will enter the medieval village of Donnas, a strategic village in medieval times and characterized by the presence of some important historical buildings such as Palazzo Enrielli and the Ancient Mint. We will not fail to discover the beautiful Chapel of Saint’Orso rebuilt in the 17th century which preserves valuable 18th century frescoes realised by an important painter. The walk will also be enriched by a visit to the Lou Dzeut Cooperative which for decades has continued the ancient handcraft tradition of hand weaving hemp canvas, packaging and embroidering precious artefacts.

The itinerary ends with a rich tasting of excellent wines, including the famous “Donnas”.
